Blues Fest, Armory Square, Dinosaur BBQ, Farmer’s Market, Everson Museum and so much more to explore and do in Downtown Syracuse. Let’s explore a little of its past.
Once the hub of the commercial salt trade, Syracuse enjoyed its prime spot on the Erie Canal eventually earning it the affectionate name of “Salty City” (don’t miss an opportunity to try our famous Salt Potatoes.) Syracuse, home of the Onondaga Indian Nation, was also known as the "great central depot on the Underground Railroad," and held the National Woman's Rights Convention in 1852, working toward the granting of a woman’s right to vote.
Syracuse is now known for its fine universities (Syracuse University and LeMoyne College among others,) and outstanding medical facilities and teaching hospitals. Syracuse has also been a leader in green technologies opening up new cutting edge businesses and economic opportunities.
Syracuse also has a lively arts scene unprecedented for a city of its size; Syracuse Symphony, Syracuse Opera, M&T Jazz Festival, Society for New Music, Everson Museum (recently hosting the Masterpieces of the Davies Collection, Turner to Cezanne exhibit), International Mask and Puppet Museum and many other galleries and arts venues.
Syracuse, affectionately known by its sister city Siracusa in Italy, has been home to many immigrants throughout its history and continues to be a major resettlement area for refugees from such diverse countries as Sudan, Somalia, Liberia, Burma, Cambodia, Uzbekistan, Cuba, Vietnam, Columbia, Congo D.R., Burundi, and Ethiopia. With such vibrant communities throughout the city Syracuse enjoys wonderful ethnic dining and cultural festivals of all kinds.
With ice skating in Clinton Square, boutique shopping in Armory Square, French cuisine (L’Adour) and the Downtown Farmer’s Market all near Hanover Square, downtown Syracuse has it all…food, culture, festivals, Division I sports and of course its people; even with the reputation as the “snowiest city” in the US, those who call Syracuse their home know they at the heart of someplace special.
